Tips for Testing Screen Sharing
- 1Click “Start Test” and select the screen, window, or browser tab you want to share.
- 2Verify the preview shows the correct content and check resolution, frame rate, and audio track availability.
- 3Close sensitive applications and notifications before sharing your entire screen.
Understanding Screen Sharing
How Does Screen Sharing Work?
Screen sharing uses the Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia) to capture your screen, an application window, or a browser tab. The browser creates a video stream from the selected source, displayed locally or transmitted over WebRTC for collaboration.
Screen Sharing vs. Remote Desktop
Screen sharing only transmits visual output — viewers can see your screen but not control it. Remote desktop allows remote keyboard and mouse control and typically needs more bandwidth because communication is bidirectional.
Privacy & Performance Tips
Sharing a specific window or browser tab is safer than sharing your entire screen. For smoother performance, close resource-heavy applications and reduce display resolution if the preview feels laggy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I share just one window instead of my entire screen?
Yes. When you click Start Test, your browser will offer options to share your entire screen, a specific application window, or a browser tab. Select “Window” to share only one application.
Why is the screen sharing preview laggy?
Performance depends on your display resolution and system resources. Try closing unnecessary applications, reducing screen resolution, or sharing a single window instead of the full screen.
Is my screen content being sent to a server?
No. The screen capture is displayed entirely in your browser. No screen data is transmitted, recorded, or stored anywhere unless you start a local recording and download the file yourself.
Why does the audio track show “Not shared”?
System or tab audio capture depends on your browser and operating system. Some browsers do not offer audio when sharing certain sources. You can still test video capture without audio.
